This Memorial Weekend marks the unofficial start to summer and that means more boats will be on our area rivers.  Benton County Sheriff Deputy JP Benitez says it's important to know the rules and regulations of operating your vessel safely.

State law requires all vessels, including canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards to have at least one properly fitted Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person onboard.  All children, 12 and younger are always required to wear a life jacket.

The Benton County Sheriff's Office, Franklin County Sheriff's Office, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary have certified vessel examiners who will perform free vessel safety checks.  the checks can be performed at a boat ramp, dock-side, or other pre-determined locations and take 15-30 minutes.  There is no charge, and no consequences for not passing.  Learn more and schedule a vessel safety check by visiting:  cgaux.org/vsc/.

Also, Washington boaters are required to complete an approved boating safety education course and carry a Washington State Boater Education Card.  All boaters and paddlers are responsible for knowing the laws and keeping themselves and others safe.  For more information, visit:  boatered.org.
