A new card skimmer investigation is underway, this time in Umatilla County.

Sheriff's deputies say a skimmer was found on a card reader inside the store next to the cash register at Space Age Fuel on Highway 207 near Hermiston.

The Umatilla County Sheriff's Office says it's investigating after a card skimmer was found at a business in the Hermiston area on Wednesday.

Employees discovered the device, but aren't sure how long it's been there.

"We would like to alert people who have purchased items at the Space Age store recently to check their bank accounts for any suspicious activity and contact your bank," the sheriff's office said in a press release.

Authorities say the theft devices are becoming more and more sophisticated, look authentic, and can be placed virtually anywhere.

They encourage you to protect yourself by examining devices for signs of tampering or anything that looks out of place before using it.

That includes examining the card reader device and keypad for looseness, cracks, dents or other damage, mismatched colors, and tape or glue.

They say credit cards with a chip are less likely to be skimmed.
