Kennewick City Councilmember John Trumbo has been censured for "inappropriate" actions.

On a 5-2 vote, the council stripped the former newspaper reporter of his board and commission assignments for the remainder of the year, following a closed-door session at the end of Tuesday's council meeting.

The council reports Trumbo used his office and title to investigate rumors about Mayor Pro Tem Steve Lee. Specifically, Trumbo left his council business card with a citizen and filed a report with the Benton County Sheriff's Department alleging illegal activity at Lee's marijuana business he owns with his wife, "Geeen 2 Go".

That investigation concluded those rumors were baseless.

Trumbo argued the sanctions, stating he had a responsibility to so something once he heard of the rumors.
