Fire officials say a fire that scorched about an acre of heavy brush and trees in Zintel Canyon Wednesday morning was likely caused by humans.

Residents in the 800 block of Anderson St. reported the fire at 11:40 am. Fire crews responded and found brush of fire, which quickly spread to a dead tree nearby.

"There was obviously people living down there," said Captain Brian Ellis, Deputy Fire Marshal with the Kennewick Fire Department. "There's no identifiable ignition source, so it's likely that the fire was human-caused."

The fire never threatened any homes, and no one was hurt.

This is the fourth major fire in Zintel Canyon so far this year.

Later Wednesday afternoon, crews were still on the scene using chainsaws to remove sections of a dead treat that had burned during the blaze. Because of the fire, city officials say the walking trail through Zintel Canyon is closed between 7th and 15th Avenues.

Investigators have not identified any suspects in connection with the fire. Anyone with information can contact the Kennewick Fire Department Investigations Division at 509-585-4230.
