Washington State was awarded $140 million as a part of the Volkswagen diesel emissions settlement. $12 million of that went to replace 336 of the oldest school buses in the state with newer and cleaner diesel and even propane emission buses.

The state Ecology Department reports 37 of those new buses were allocated to districts in Benton and Franklin counties with about half of them on the roads this year, and the other half next school year.

The next round of grants from the settlement will go to buying electric buses for selected districts around Washington.
