More snow and rain in eastern and central Washington does not necessarily mean less chance for severe wildfires.

DNR Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark say snow pack rarely correlates with the severity of fire season.

“The truth of the matter is that it really depends the weather during the normal period of wildfires, which normally starts late June, but now starting earlier in June and going late sometimes as October,” says Goldmark.

The department has already been working to remove dead trees and brush, to help keep summer fires small.

The DNR is working with many groups to advise them on how to reduce wildfires approaching homes, by removing weeds, how to put fire sheeting on the home, ect.
