A man has died after struggling with Richland Police officers who tried taking him into custody overnight.

According to Detective Sgt. Drew Florence, officers responded to a domestic violence assault that was reported in the area of McPherson Ave. and Wilson Street at about 11:52pm Sunday.

Police say they were informed that a man had assaulted another man, and that the suspect was throwing beer bottles at a home.

When officers got to the scene, they confronted the suspect, who refused to cooperate.

"After a struggle involving multiple officers, the male was taken into custody," Florence said in a press release.

The suspect was taken to the hospital to be checked for injuries, and was later pronounced dead.

Police haven't released any information about a possible cause of death, but say several officers received minor injuries in the struggle to arrest the suspect.

No information about the suspect's identity has been released yet.

The Special Investigations Unit will be conducting the ongoing investigation.
