The Federal Emergency Management Agency plans to conduct a nation-wide test of the Integrated public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) on Thursday, September. 20th, 2018. IPAWS encompasses the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEA).

The test, coordinated by FEMA and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will be broadcast via radio, TV, cable stations and wireless carriers. The WEA portion of the test will occur at 11:18 a.m. Pacific Time. The EAS portion will occur at 11:20 a.m. Pacific Time.

There's nothing you need to do to make sure the alert goes to your phone, and nothing you'll need to do after the alert.

" This system is designed to automatically turn on your cell phone, and provide text information for you on what important information you need to know," said Deanna Davis with Benton County Emergency Management.

Thursday's test will include verbiage notifying you that the Presidential Alert is a test of the Emergency Alert System.

Davis says outside of testing, the WEA alerts will only happen in the event of a national emergency.

For local emergencies, residents in Benton and Franklin Counties can register online with Code Red, or download the Code Red app to receive alerts or phone calls for notifications.
